Birthstones have become increasingly popular in recent times, but their history is much, much longer.

History of Birthstones
Birthstones have been present throughout centuries-long, worldwide history. There are mentions of them in the Bible, Hindu scripts, and Modern times.
Biblical Origins
This tradition of the birthstone goes back to the Book of Exodus, in which the breastplate that was worn by Aaron was described. It says that the first high priest of the Israelites wears a breastplate with twelve stones. They represented twelve tribes of Israel and were believed to have magical properties.
Christians started wearing all twelve stones in honor of the original breastplate. As time passed they started wearing one stone on its own, based on which one was believed to have heightened powers at that time. This eventually lead to associating particular gemstones with the zodiac and birth months.
Hindu Roots
Hindu tradition has a lot of references to stones with mystical powers.
The Ratna Pariksha, a 5th-century Hindu text, connects specific stones to certain planets, deities, and days of the week. Vedic astrologers recommend particular gemstones to individuals based on their astrological signs.
Hindu practices associate nine gemstones with the different celestial forces, called navaratna in Sanskrit. These pieces are believed to grant the wearer cosmic harmony, as well as stand as a symbol of status and wealth.
Modern times
Even though birthstones had been around for a while, it wasn’t until the year 1912, that the National Association of Jewelers (now the Jewelers of America) met in order to officially standardize the list of American birthstones. This list evolved over time, mostly to ensure that the stones they chose would increase the sales for American jewelers.
The most recent changes happened in 2002. when the gem Tanzanite was added to December’s stones, and the recent addition to the list was Spinel for the month of August in 2016.
